While the exterior has been updated at least a little, it’s the cabin that deserves all the praise for its enhanced aesthetics and features. While the base trim is stuck in the past, both literally and figuratively, the rest of the lineup gets a much-needed new look and feel. Materials and controls have been swapped out for stuff that’s a little more refined, while a 13.4-inch touchscreen acts as a centrepiece of form and function.

According to the automaker, Canadian software teams were behind much of the development of the Silverado’s new infotainment interface, which was good before but inches closer to outstanding status. With 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, this naturally aspirated unit is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission instead of the 2.7L’s eight-speed, and there’s an entire theatrical performance that accompanies prods of the accelerator. The Silverado 2500HD EV is offered with a gasoline or turbodiesel V-8 engine, both displacing 6.6 liters and connected to an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Base trucks are RWD as standard, while 4WD is offered or included depending on trim. The gasoline engine makes 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. Expect a 0-60-mph acceleration time of approximately 7.0 seconds. We much prefer the available Duramax turbodiesel V-8, which churns out 470 hp and 975 hp. With this engine, the 2500HD EV hustles to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds. Fuel economy may be better than with the gas V-8, but still doesn’t excel, coming in at about 16 mpg in mixed driving during our assessments.
